Robert Small

Alpena

Robert “Bob” Small, 61, of Alpena, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
His funeral service was Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Alpena Community Center, with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, Alpena. Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron, with family present and a time of sharing at 7 p.m.
Robert Carl Small was born May 9, 1956, to Richard and Doris (Leighton) Small, at Huron. He graduated from Alpena High School.
On Jan. 5, 1974, he married Linda Lou Lambert at Huron.
In March of 1980, Bob started work at the Federal Building. He retired in November of 2011, and then drove bus for People’s Transit from Sept. 25, 2012, until his passing. Bob volunteered with the Alpena Fire Department for more than 42 years.
Bob was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan, hunted, golfed and played on Larry Hampshire’s softball team. He enjoyed camping and sharing a cold one with his friends. Most of all, he loved his family, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and attending their activities.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Stacy (Shane) Machtemes of Faulkton; two sons, Jon (Sarah) Small of Brandon, and Cody (Jaclyn) Small of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren; eight siblings, Susie (Doug) Tschetter of Huron, Nancy (Bill) Dawson of St. Charles, Mo., Jayne (Bobby) Hyde of Farmington, Minn., Pete (Sandy) Small of Rapid City, Richard (Carla) Small of Alpena, and Steven Small, A.J. Small, and Gina Small, all of Huron; mother-in-law, Martha Lambert of Faulkton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; father-in-law, Richard Lambert; niece, Elizabeth Robinson-Grillo; and his wife of 40 years, Linda.

Phyllis Swartz

Yakima, Wash.

Phyllis (Jacobson) Koffler Swartz, 85, of Yakima, Wash., died July 25, 2017. Interment of ashes was at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas.
Phyllis was born Aug. 9, 1931, on a farm east of Woonsocket to Elvin and Thelma (Johnson) Jacobson. She attended Baruth country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Woonsocket High School in the Class of 1949. She worked as a waitress at the Corner Café through her high school years.
She married Lyle Koffler June 4, 1949. Phyllis attended beauty school in Aberdeen and owned her own shop in Groton. In retirement, they moved to El Paso, Texas. Lyle died there in 1987.
Phyllis married Douglas Swartz in 1991. He died in December 2009. In 2012, Phyllis moved to Yakima, Wash., where she eventually entered hospice.
She is survived by her two children, Lona (Curtis) Belden and Mark (Tess) Koffler; her two brothers, Robert Fay Jacobson and Delvin Jacobson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Curtis Losing

Sioux Falls

Curtis L. “Curt” Losing, 86, of Sioux Falls, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service was Friday, Oct. 13, at Good News Reformed Church in Sioux Falls with interment and military rites in Hills of Rest Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 12, at George Boom Funeral Home and Crematory in Sioux Falls, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Curtis LeRoy Losing was born Jan. 22, 1931, in Woonsocket, to Henry and Pauline Losing. He graduated from Virgil High School in 1949 and was drafted into the Army in October of 1951.
He married Virginia “Ginnie” Johnson on March 14, 1954, and they lived in Alpena and Huron before settling in Sioux Falls in 1963. While there, Curtis worked for the Sioux Falls water department and then the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1992. In retirement, he worked for a wholesale company delivering flowers and also volunteered at the VA. Ginnie passed away in May of 2008.
On Nov. 14, 2009, Curt married Elaine Harden. The couple enjoyed traveling on bus trips.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Elaine; three children, Debbie (Walt) Babcock of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jim Losing of Minneapolis, Minn., and Julie (Kip) Lafrenz of Sioux Falls; three stepsons, Terry, Robert and David Spitznagel; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; brother, Elmer (Myrna) Losing; and sister, EllaMae (Allen) Hofer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ginnie, and sister, Betty.
