Richard Quam

Sioux Falls

Richard “Dick” Quam, 74, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at his home.
A memorial visitation was held at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls on Monday, Oct. 9.
Richard Connell Quam was born April 21, 1943, in Aberdeen to Connell Benjamin and Esther Alma (Reber) Quam. Growing up he loved farming, running track, and developed a lifelong passion for reading. He served in the 82nd Airborne and then attended South Dakota State University. Dick completed flight school in Denver and became a professional pilot. He instructed, flew lifeflights and charters, and became a corporate pilot. He retired as NorthWestern Energy chief pilot in 2005.
He had four children with his first wife, Sandy.
Dick married Lois Judy, formerly of Forestburg, on July 23, 1983, and they enjoyed traveling, bowling and golfing. Dick liked to hunt and fish with his family and friends, and especially liked to share his love of gardening and the outdoors. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lois; four children, Jeff (Jana) Quam of Sioux Falls, Christie (Mac) Case of Tucson, Ariz., Julie Buss of Hudson, Wis., and Dan (Stacy) Quam of Huron; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and half-siblings, Alene Maches and Carroll Quam.

Shane Oberg

Artesian

Shane David Oberg, 47, of Artesian, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2017.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 12, at Mitchell Assembly of God Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 11, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, also at the church.
Shane was born Sept. 30, 1970, to David and Nancy (Anderson) Oberg in Chisago City, Minn. He began working at the age of 16 at Sell Publishing. He graduated from Summit Christian Academy in 1988, and then attended Century College for law enforcement. Shane began working at Idea Goyr Mail, as well as Margaret S. Parmly Residence as a certified nursing assistant.
In 1997, Shane married Jo Anne Larson and the couple welcomed three children.
Shane loved deer hunting with family. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, traveling, taking care of his dog, Alpha, and most of all being a Vikings fan and taking bus trips with Jo.
Shane led by example in his church, Mitchell Assembly of God, where he was a board member for many years and taught Royal Rangers for nine years. He was involved in community activities including chain gang at Sanborn Central football games, volunteering at The Love Feast in Mitchell and mowing and snow blowing for neighbors.
Shane is survived by his wife, Jo; his son, Tony (Caroline) Oberg, of Howard; his daughters, Bonnie Oberg of Mitchell and Crystal (Benjamin) Stech of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren; his parents, David and Nancy Oberg of Chisago City, Minn; his sisters, Kim (Jim) Stone of Taylors Falls, Minn., and Carey (David) Mosel of Lafayette, Minn.; his aunt, Gerry (Al) Ohlgren of Menagha, Minn; his uncle, Ron (Bobbi) Anderson of International Falls, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, LaFloyd and Nora Oberg and Ernie and Wanda Anderson.
Arrangements are with Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Arlene M. Hotchkiss, 85, of Huron and formerly of Alpena, passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at her residence in Huron with family by her side.
Her funeral service was Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Alpena Community Center with burial following in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpena. Visitation with a 7 p.m. prayer service was Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron.
Arlene was born Aug. 19, 1932, in Huron to Theodore and Ruth W. (Hilgeman) Schaffer. She attended school and graduated from high school in Alpena.
She was united in marriage to Gerald “Smiley” Hotchkiss on Aug. 27, 1950, at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. Together, they owned and operated the G&G Recreation Bar and Grill in Alpena for 20 years.
Arlene enjoyed crocheting, reading, puzzle books, and playing cards. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Alpena American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Society and United Methodist Church in Alpena.
Arlene is survived by two sons, Jeff (Pat) Hotchkiss of Woonsocket, and Larry Hotchkiss of Huron; three daughters, Rosie (Bob) Haibeck of Alpena, Katie (Les) McKinney of Sioux Falls, and Sue (Craig) Thesenvitz of Huron; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Mastin and Connie Crandall, both of Rapid City; four sisters-in-law, DeSchaffer of Brandon, Joyce (Gilbert) Hotchkiss of Alpena, Joyce Mees of Alpena, and Evonne Johnson of Sioux Falls; and one brother-in-law, Kenny Doran of Pierre.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald on Sept. 7, 2013; and six brothers, Allen, Leonard, LeRoy, Arnold, Vernon, and Lloyd Schaffer in infancy.
