The second and third grade students at Woonsocket Elementary have had another opportunity to put their creative juices to work and display their results for all to admire. A sign in the hallway stated, “The second and third grade classes read a very entertaining book called Rot, The Cutest in the World, about a potato who enters a competition to be judged for being the cutest in the world. In this funny book, the potato tried to change his looks to be cuter and then decided to just be himself.”

As a follow-up to the story, each student was sent home with a potato to create the “cutest in the world.” They could be as creative as they wanted to be, and they came up with some great contestants for their own competition for the “cutest in Woonsocket Elementary” contest.

On Monday, the second graders voted for the winners in the third grade, and the third graders voted for the winners in the second-grade class. The winners in the second grade were first place – Sterling Baruth with R2D2, second place – Daniel Larson with Mr. Bruce, and third place – Brylee Bruce with a baby and Bryce Hjelm with Spudnick rocket. The winners in the third grade were first place – Reed Goergen with his pheasant, second place – Harper Torgerson with an ice cream cone, and third place – Mary Eichstadt with a baby and Griffin Kogel with his Cowboy creation.

April is School Library Month, and National Library Week is April 23-29 this year, so it is only fitting to highlight some wonderful things that have taken place recently at the Woonsocket School and Community Library.

To start, Woonsocket Librarian Tracey Steele was recently awarded a grant for $1,500 to be used for the summer reading program only. Steele applied for the Stephanie Miller-Davis Library grant a couple months ago and received the news that Woonsocket Library was a recipient in March. The $1,500 will be used for everything planned for this year’s summer reading program including books; prizes; party, craft and/or activity supplies and reading incentives.

In addition to that fantastic news, the library was provided funding to purchase four virtual reality (VR) headsets. According to Superintendent Dr. Rod Weber, the school had to spend some of its money in the General Fund to meet the state’s General Fund Cap Law. This was a great way to utilize the funds because it benefits kids of all ages and adults.
