On Wednesday, March 1, high school students from Woonsocket School and Sanborn Central participated in the 28th annual CBH Academic Festival held in Mitchell, where nine local schools competed against each other in 18 academic categories as well as a team quiz bowl competition. 

This year, 14 Woonsocket students and 18 Sanborn Central students attended the festival.

Woonsocket took third place in the quiz bowl competition and placed fifth overall.

The Woonsocket Quiz bowl team, consisting of Acaiya Schultz, Blake Howard, Camden Rassel, and Hannah Terkildsen,  placed third.

On Friday, March 3, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket FFA traveled to Redfield for their first CDE competition of the year. The SCW FFA teams and individuals performed well, with many ranking in the top 20 percent of competitors.

In Natural Resources, SCW ranked fourth out of 27 teams.

In Floriculture, the team from SCW came in fifth out of 27 teams.

In Milk Quality and Products, SCW came in fourth out of 17 teams.

In Agricultural Mechanics, the SCW team ranked 16th out of 25 teams.

In Agronomy, the SCW team ranked 17th.

In Livestock Evaluation, the team from SCW earned 16th.

In Veterinary Sciences, SCW ranked 17th.

In Nursery Landscape, the SCW team came in 11th.

In Poultry, the SCW team came in 13th.

The SCW FFA will travel to the Bridgewater-Emery CDE competition on March 14.

As a part of the Dakota Assemblies company based out of Minnesota, the “Reading is Magic” show found its way to Woonsocket on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Magician and motivational speaker, Louie Foxx, performed for the students in grades PreK-six with his magic tricks, jokes, stories and explanations about what can be learned and gained from reading books. 

Foxx was in Woonsocket for his last stop of a five-week, five-state tour of school assemblies to promote reading. His focus was on the use of idioms in reading and in everyday use. He used some examples and explained the history behind them to the kids in a way that they could get a better understanding of the meaning of the common saying. Some examples he referred to were “comparing apples to oranges,” “keep me in the loop” and “the cat’s out of the bag.”
