For her senior project this year, Kenlie Fridley decided to take on the responsibility of organizing presentations to be given to the students at her school during Farm Safety Week. As a member and an officer of the SCW FFA, Fridley had been involved in chapter discussions about what to do during farm safety week, but nothing had been decided definitively, so she came to the conclusion that it would be a great project for her to take on as a senior project.

Once she spoke to SCW FFA advisor Mr. Todd Welch and he confirmed that she could facilitate the speakers as a senior project, Fridley and Mr. Welch started contacting possible speakers to cover different farm/rural safety topics. When she had enough speakers lined up to cover all the areas they wanted to have discussed, she made up fliers to inform people of the dates, times and subject areas being covered along with the guest speaker who would be talking about each subject.

The Sanborn Central cafeteria staff held a party for elementary students, during which they talked about the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Students were able to inspect and taste some different fruits and vegetables that they possibly had never experienced before, including artichokes, coconuts, and guava.

The USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program makes fresh fruit and vegetable snacks available at no cost to all children in participating schools. The goal of the program is to create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, increase children’s fruit and vegetable consumption, and make a difference in children’s diets to affect their present and future health.

On Friday, Sept. 30, the Woonsocket School will have their annual Blackhawk parade starting at 1 p.m. The theme this year (voted on by the student council) is “Board Games.” Businesses who are interested in participating in the parade can sign up when lining up for the parade at 12:30 p.m. by PVHC. The football game against the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers will start at 7 p.m. in Wessington Springs.

I’m also asking students and alumni to be respectful towards our community when celebrating traditions during the week of festivities.

Homecoming is arriving quickly, and we hope the community gets involved as much as the school.  This is one of the biggest events of the year, so let’s make it memorable for everyone. Go Blackhawks!
