
THE WOONSOCKET/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks little girls cheerleaders provided the halftime entertainment for Thursday night’s final home game and the only game played in Woonsocket.
The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks fought the good fight on their own field in Woonsocket on Thursday, Oct. 24, but ended their regular season with a 42-22 loss to undefeated Wolsey-Wessington.
The Blackhawks took an early lead when Austin Messmer received a short pass from Joe Davis and ran the ball in from 54 yards out.
The Warbirds answered on their next possession with a 70-yard touchdown pass. However, the Blackhawks quickly retook the lead when Davis hit Cole Wormstadt on a 64-yard touchdown pass making the score 14-6 after the first quarter.
W/WS/SC increased the lead to 16-6 when they forced a safety, but Wolsey-Wessington cut the lead to 16-14 with just over a minute to go in the half.
The Warbirds scored two quick touchdowns at the start of the second half to take a 10-point lead. The Blackhawks answered with a determined drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Jarid Bechen cutting the lead to 26-22.
The Blackhawks were unable to score again, while Wolsey-Wessington added a couple touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score 42-22.
Messmer led the offense with 75 yards rushing on 14 carries. He also had two catches for 60 yards. Davis was 8-of-20 passing for 162 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception.
Jacob Fouberg and Messmer led the defense in tackles with 14 and 12, respectively.
The Warbirds were led by Ryan Johnson, who rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown and Lorenzo Williams, who completed three passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
