The Sanborn Central FFA and Woonsocket FFA attended the annual South Dakota FFA Leadership Retreats at Swan Lake, Viborg.  A total of nine students from the two chapters discovered “The Places They’ll Go” with FFA.
The retreats centered on a Dr. Seuss theme, focusing on “Oh, The Places You’ll Go with FFA.”  FFA members developed and enhanced their leadership skills and self-confidence through interactive learning. The program featured workshops that helped members discover the value of attitude, motivation, passion, personal growth, teamwork and communication.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture organized a panel of agricultural industry professionals to speak with FFA members about opportunities in agriculture.  They will use these new skills and ideas to benefit their local chapters and communities.
Retreat attendees also participated in service learning projects and packed 28,728 meals for Kids Against Hunger. In addition, the Sanborn Central FFA Chapter was selected as the “East River Leadership Retreat Best Represented Chapter.”
South Dakota FFA has 3,962 members in 77 school districts in South Dakota, and 557,318 FFA members in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  FFA develops premier leadership, personal growth and career success through high school agriculture education curriculum.
The retreats were directed by the 2013-2014 State FFA Officers: President Makayla Heisler, Newell; Vice President Breanna Bullington, Brookings; Secretary Cheyenne Leonhardt, Groton; Treasurer David Strain, Sturgis; Reporter Carrietta Schalesky, Faith; and Sentinel Shala Larson, Webster.  Retreat staff also included Courtney Schaeffer, Menno; and Kyle Kramer, Flandreau; SD FFA Ambassadors.
The retreat was sponsored by the SD Department of Agriculture, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto and Northland Ford.  SD Wheat Growers and SD Stockgrowers Association provided folders for each attendee and Mitchell Technical Institute provided pens.

Linda Whitney reported on the upcoming ASBSD-SASD Joint Convention, Superintendent Conference, Google Chromebooks, Direct Digital Control to update existing Siemens Talon control system, Piggyback off Bus Bids with possible action to follow, and information back from area superintendents on giving extra weight to certain courses.
Motion by VanLaecken, seconded by Schmit, all aye, to approve piggyback onto Hitchcock/Tulare bus bid with Foreman Bus Sales to purchase a 29-passenger bus.
Based upon the provisions of SDCL 13-11-2, the Sanborn Central Board of Education held its annual hearing for adoption of the 2013-2014 School District Budget. Discussion was held.
Motion by Schmit, seconded by Austerman, all aye, to approve the adoption of the 2013-2014 Sanborn Central School District 55-5 Budget as amended. General Fund Means of Finance: Est. Surplus to finance budget 305,138.20 change to 186,443.49, State Aid: Regular 306,887.09 change to 425,581.80. Balances remained the same.
There being no further business to come before the 2012-2013 Board of Education, the meeting was adjourned sine die at 5:00 p.m., July 12, 2013.

Administered the Oath of Office to returning board member Murray VanLaecken, appointed to Letcher one-year term, and new board member Clayton Dean, Artesian, two-year term. Mayor Chada called the meeting to order with Ackman, Knutson, Hoffman, and Hohbach in attendance. Also meeting with the board were f. Blindauer, K. Blindauer, and T. Kelly.
Reports:
Water/Sewer: Discussion was held on the lift station not functioning properly. Chada will contact Dakota Pump. Ackman was instructed to contact District III and ask if the sewer project is scaled back – will the funding also be scaled back? Discussion was also held on applying for USDA funding. There was some confusion regarding the reading of the water meters on June 15. Customers will be sent billing or the minimum’s with an explanation as soon as possible.
Community Center: The board discussed the disappearance of the wheel chairs belonging to the Legion. A search was held with no results.
West Nile: C&J will once again fog with the rates remaining at $75/per person and $.55 per mile.
A motion was made by Hoffman, seconded by Knutson, carried, to approve the June minutes as read.
Old business: Library opening was discussed with Kelly and Blindauers. They have offered to open it for the summer months and every other Saturday on a trail basis. They hope to coordinate with a 4-H group for youth activities. The board agreed to their proposal with a motion from Knutson, seconded by Hoffman, carried.
New Business: A motion was made by Knutson, seconded by Hoffman, to pursue USDA funding contingent upon the answer from District III regarding the possibility of cutting back the project. Therefore:
WHEREAS, the Town of Letcher is interested in making certain improvements to the sewer system, consisting of replacing the sewage lift station and stabilizing the sewage treatment ponds; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Letcher proposes to apply for USDA rural Development assistance in order to assist in making the improvements; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Letcher is eligible for federal assistance for the proposed project;  and
WHEREAS, with the submission of this application, the Town of Letcher assures and certifies that all Rural Development program requirements will be fulfilled.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Letcher Town Board duly authorizes the submission of this application requesting approximately $586,250 in assistance for the project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Chairperson of the Letcher Town Board be authorized execute this application on behalf of the Town.
