Microsoft virus scam reported

The Sanborn County Sheriff’s office would like to alert residents of a computer scam that has occurred in the county and to be on the lookout.        A woman was initially contacted by phone last fall by someone claiming to be with Microsoft. They told her they saw her computer was running slow and they would fix it and charged her $300 on her credit card.
Since the phone call the woman noticed her computer began acting funny, slowed down and had more pop-ups. She got in contact with them again and they asked for more credit card information.
She then received a call from her Cabela’s Visa that there had been a fraud alert on her card.
If you feel you have been a victim of this scam, contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986 or consumerhelp@state.sd.us or call the Sanborn County Sheriff’s office at 796-4511.
