THE WOONSOCKET third grade class shows off their dictionaries, given to them by the Woonsocket American Legion Auxiliary.

THE WOONSOCKET fifth graders were given pocket Constitutions recently by the Post #29 Auxiliary.

Members of Woonsocket American Legion Auxiliary Post 29 recently presented the Woonsocket third grade class with their own dictionaries and the Woonsocket fifth grade class with pocket Constitutions. The Dictionary Project and Constitutions are part of how the Auxiliary supports the Give 10 to Education program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Barbara Brisbine

Minneapolis, Minn.

Barbara Brisbine, 66, of Minneapolis, Minn., died Dec. 30, 2013 at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital.
A memorial service was held Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Woonsocket, with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating.
Barbara was born Jan. 10, 1947 to Phyllis (Bratsberg) and Tom R. Brisbine, Sr. at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell. She graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1965 and went on to pursue her education at the University of South Dakota. Barbara was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Women’s Fraternity, Epsilon Chapter, a legacy in the Hazen and Brisbine lineages. She graduated with a degree in history and English from the University of South Dakota in 1969.
Barbara lived and worked most of her adult life in downtown Minneapolis. A lifelong traveler, Barbara enjoyed her adventures all over Europe, Australia and her most recent trip to the Caribbean in December 2013. She enjoyed the arts and held season tickets to the Minnesota Orchestra and the Guthrie for many years. With the help of a great friend and caregiver, Pam Hill, Barbara was able to enjoy her last years of life. She was an avid reader and her philanthropic spirit continues to live on through her generous donations.
Barbara is survived by one niece, Tricia Brisbine (Andy Phillips); one great-nephew, Charlie Brisbine of Andover, Minn.; two aunts, Joey (Kenneth) Steichen of Mitchell, and Jean (Bob) Lewis of Conneticut; one beloved sister-in-law, Judy (Dick) Brisbine of Woonsocket; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and two brothers, T.R. Brisbine and Dick Brisbine.

Marlowe Medley

Marlowe Laverne Medley, age 88, of Mitchell, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Private family services were held Friday, Jan. 3 at Will Funeral Chapel with burial in Graceland Cemetery.
Marlowe Laverne Medley, son of Edwin and Frances (Lambrechts) Medley, was born Jan. 10, 1925 in Twin Brooks. They lived at Twin Brooks and Milbank before moving to Woonsocket, where Marlowe quite high school to enlist in the US Navy. He entered the US Navy on Jan. 17, 1943 and served aboard the carrier USS Essex during WWII for three years. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 20, 1946.
Upon returning to Woonsocket, he worked at the Milwaukee Railroad. He married Geneva Eastman on Dec. 9, 1946 in Rapid City. The couple moved to Puyallup, Wash. where he worked for the Milwaukee and Union Pacific Railroads until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement the couple moved back to South Dakota and made their home in Mitchell.
He belonged to the American Legion Post 18.
Marlowe is survived by his daughter, Marlene Wise, Mitchell; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva; their son, Ronald; his parents; two sisters, Ileen Madsen and Garnetta Forbes; and his brother, Francis “Bud” Medley.
