Kylie Schlenker, Taryn Guinn and Brooke Doering won first, second and third places, respectively, in the annual Legion Auxiliary Post 29 Americanism Poetry Contest.
The winners received a cash prize from the Woonsocket American Legion Auxiliary, and the the first place winner’s poem was sent on to compete at district level of the ALA.
The winning poems are as follows:

First place —
“Joining Together for Our Veterans”
By Kylie Schlenker
Many men and women died,
But they fought with great pride.
We honor all of those who fight,
So we are safe day and night.

They took a stand,
Let’s give them a hand.
It gives us freedom I will not lie,
So very sad it makes me cry.

People support these Veterans so brave,
Many people they will save.
Stand together for the Veterans still here,
And give them all a mighty cheer.

Second place —
“Joining Together for Our Veterans”
By Taryn Guinn
When they go and fight for our nation,
We will get a safe sensation.
They are always fighting for our country,
While they remember why they fight strongly.

As they fight some might die,
But they will still try and try.
Even though we go through rough times,
We will feel safe at all times.

Families are anxious to see their mom or dad,
As soon as the veterans get home the kids are glad.
On Veteran’s Day people join together,
And we celebrate what they have done together.

Third place —
“Joining Together for Our Veterans”
By Brooke Doering
While these men and women protect our nation,
Many times they fear no hesitation.
All of these fighters keep us free,
In the meanwhile, they protect you and me.

Us Americans pray all day and night,
Hoping our soldiers return from the fight.
Several men and women are in the air,
Which means their families are unaware.

Protecting us is what they do best,
So all of us Americans can sit and rest.
People around the world have no clue,
That joining together for our Veterans is what we do.
