The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Lady Blackhawks are back on the State “B” Tournament bracket.
The girls endured a one-year hiatus following a hard regional loss to DeSmet last year. Since then the girls have been trying to get that bitter taste out of their mouths, and Friday night, they got it done.
SCW will appear in their fourth tournament in a total of five years as a co-op, beginning this Thursday night. The 19-4 Hawks have been seeded sixth and will take on No. 3 seed Wall at 7:45 p.m. in the Huron Arena.
The previous three tournament trips have earned their schools fourth, fifth and second place banners to hang in their gyms. Entering the tournament as the sixth seed automatically puts the Blackhawks at a bit of a disadvantage. However the Huron Arena is familiar turf for the girls, so they’re hoping to capitalize on that home court advantage.
Unlike the veteran, multi-faceted team that came within a hair of the championship in 2014, the Blackhawks of today are a much younger group of girls, largely driven by the efforts of Myah Selland. However, a well-rounded cast of supporting characters, along with an unselfish leader, continue to open up new avenues to success for the Hawks and have led them to a 19-4 season and an easy glide into the “B’s”.
The winner of Thursday night’s game will face the winner between No. 2 Ethan and No. 7 Irene-Wakonda Friday night at 7:45 p.m. The loser will enter the consolation bracket and play Friday afternoon at 1:45 p.m.
A couple of familiar rivals will also be making appearances in the tournament. No. 1 seed Sully Buttes comes in the heavy favorite with 46.8 seed points and an unbeaten record.
Ethan has earned the No. 2 seed with 44.55 points and a 19-4 record. Faith is the fourth seed and Avon made the tournament at No. 5. Leola/Frederick, at No. 8, faces off against Sully Buttes in the opening game of the tournament’s first session Thursday at noon.
Tickets are sold at the door and season tickets can be purchased on Thursday for $35 for an adult and $22 for students.
The entire Class B tournament will be broadcast on www.SDHSAA.com and all Sanborn Central/Woonsocket games will also be broadcast on KOOL 98.3 FM.
Per state event rules, no signs, banners or noisemakers are allowed at the tournament sessions and jumping on bleachers is also prohibited.
The local Booster Clubs have reserved a hospitality room, which will be serving food each day at 4:30 p.m. for a free will offering. Thursday at 5 p.m., a pep rally is also scheduled.
Themed dress up days for the games have been chosen by the schools’ student bodies. Thursday is “Jersey/Retro Night”, Friday is “Cowboy/Country” and Saturday is “Blackhawk Day”.
A welcome home celebration has been scheduled for noon on Sunday in the Woonsocket Gym. A caravan will meet and escort the team from the three-mile corner east of Woonsocket at 11:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to show support for the team.
