The third place game of the 2016 State “B” Tournament was promised to be full of excitement, but considering the pace of the game throughout three and a half quarters, no one could have guessed the level of drama that was yet to come.
While the Blackhawks stayed within striking distance throughout, after getting up 4-2 in the first seconds, SCW never again held a lead … until, a few minutes into the fourth quarter, when the Myah Selland Show began.
Following some fairly quiet first three quarters, in which she scored just 12 points, Selland switched on the magic and began a performance that seemed completely surreal.
With just under three and a half minutes left, the Avon Pirates had hoisted themselves to the biggest lead of the night of nine points. It was then that Selland took the controls and did the impossible.
She started out hitting a deep three pointer, which was followed by some forced Blackhawk fouling, and three Avon free throws to re-establish their lead.
Selland wasn’t discouraged, however, as she rallied and hit two more threes, back-to-back. After two graciously missed Avon free-throws, Selland brought the ball back down the court and scored in the paint.
It looked like all may be for naught when a field goal by Livi Jurrens brought the Pirates back up three points with little time left on the clock.
Still, the 6-foot-2 junior would not back down. She hit an amazing fourth three-pointer to tie up the game and send the teams into overtime.
The show wasn’t over, as on the Hawks’ first possession, Selland went up for two, drew the foul and sunk the ensuing free throw. Two points by Avon’s Hanna Powers wouldn’t be enough as Selland came back and hit an incredible fifth three-point shot.
On the next possession Selland looked to drive again, but instead drew the defense away from the lane, which opened up an assist to Abby Doering. Doering turned the opportunity into a three-point play, to essentially put the game away.
Selland scored 22 of her game-high 34 points — 15 in threes — in the final few minutes of the game, to pilot a fast and furious comeback, described as “epic.”
She also posted a double-double — her second of the tournament and her 12th of the season — with 14 rebounds.
The Blackhawks finished their season 21-5, first place in the 281 Conference and third place in the state.
