A Plankinton man suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries in an early Thursday morning crash northeast of Plankinton, and spent almost five hours trapped in his pickup.
Clinton Olinger, 44, of Plankinton and formerly of Woonsocket, was traveling north on 389th Ave. near 242nd St., 11 miles northeast of Plankinton, when his pickup left the road and entered the east ditch, crashed through a fence and into a harvested bean field. The 2003 F250 then crossed 242nd St. and hit the bank of the north ditch.
The crash happened around 5 a.m., but the Aurora County Sheriff’s office didn’t get a report of the vehicle until a passerby called it in around 9:45 a.m.
Olinger was conscious when officers arrived at the scene but was “pinned down in the floorboards,” and unable to reach his phone to call for help. He was not wearing a seatbelt. He was transferred to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell and then on to Sioux Falls.
The SD Highway Patrol, Aurora County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Ambulance and the Plankinton Fire Department responded to the accident. There are no charges pending.

HURON – A deployment ceremony will be held for about 165 soldiers of the South Dakota Army National Guard’s 153rd Engineer Battalion and its Forward Support Company, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. at the Huron Arena.
The public is encouraged to attend the event as the units depart for about a nine month deployment to Kuwait.
Woonsocket natives Ty Swenson, Tre Swenson and Marshall Freideman are members of the 153rd.
Planned speakers for the ceremony include Lt. Gov. Matt Michels, U.S. Sen. John Thune, U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, and Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, SDNG adjutant general.
The mission of the Huron-based 153rd is to provide command and control of assigned or attached engineer units. The mission of the Huron- and Parkston-based FSC is to provide logistics and maintenance support.
The units will report to Fort Bliss, Texas, to complete several weeks of theater-specific training prior to deployment overseas.
This will be the second mobilization for the 153rd, which deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005. This is the first deployment for the FSC.

penny wars 12 web    The Woonsocket Elementary students held a penny war for a week to raise money for the 153rd National Guard Unit.
The 153rd is being activated in November with training in Texas to follow, then will be sent over to Kuwait.  They will still be in Texas at Christmastime, so they are fundraising to be able to come home for Christmas before heading overseas.
Three Woonsocket alumni are members of the 153rd: Tre Swenson, Ty Swenson and Marshall Freideman.
The students ended the week with a grand total of $1,546.18. The kindergarteners were the winners of the penny war and will be rewarded with extra PE and a snack.  The entire elementary will be rewarded with a movie and popcorn later in November.
The Penny War had an overwhelming response by all students.  The kindness of each student and their families was a true lesson of “paying it forward!” What an awesome community we live in!
