Swan death prompts investigation

One of the resident swans on Lake Prior in Woonsocket was found dead Monday evening. It is unknown what caused the death, as it was found floating on the water with its head submerged.
Caretaker Charlie Knigge took the swan to a veterinarian, who sent it to SDSU, where a cause of death will be determined.
As town residents have noticed, there have been many geese and ducks using the lake for a resting stop on their migration north during the last week. It is unclear if there is any connection to that and the demise of the swan.
The swan pair raised cygnets last year that were enjoyed by many in the area, but once again, as has happened several times in past years, a lone swan glides on Lake Prior.
If anyone has any information about what may have happened to the swan, please call Gay Swenson at 796-4272 or 770-2205.
