Charles D. “Chuck/Charlie” Johnson, 86, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at Touchmark All Saints Retirement Community in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service was Tuesday, Jan. 3, at American Lutheran Church in Huron, followed by military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Interment was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Charles was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Letcher to Harvey and Mary Johnson. He attended grade school at the Christopher School in Letcher and then attended Mt. Vernon Public School.
Charles was united in marriage to Joy J. Sibbers, July 15, 1951, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey. They resided in Huron until November of 1951, when Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army. Over the next two years, they lived in Louisiana and Kentucky until 1953, when Charles was honorably discharged. They returned to Huron, where they resided until 2008, when they moved to Sioux Falls. Charles spent his whole career in various positions with the USDA Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) and was chief of the Administrative Division at the time of his retirement on Jan. 3, 1986, after 35 years of government service.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading on his Kindle, playing cards and refurbishing antiques. Charles and Joy traveled the United States extensively in their retirement years, visiting all 50 states several times, and also enjoyed many cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii.
Charles was a member of American Lutheran Church in Huron, RSVP, Huron Senior Center, Center for Active Generations, NARFE, the American Legion/40et8, and Huron bowling leagues for 49 years.
He is survived by his wife, Joy; one son, Dr. Bradley (Debbie) Johnson; one daughter, Rhonda Trudeau; two granddaughters; two brothers, Hurley Johnson and Leo Johnson; and two sisters, Jewel Eppendanz and Roseline Wadleigh.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Delbert, Norman, Merle and Ronald Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Eppendanz and David Wadleigh; and three sisters-in-law, Darylene Johnson, Betty Johnson and Evelyn Johnson.
