Commitment and integrity would be the two words to describe Shana Jensen’s years of service with the Letcher Volunteer Fire Department. Growing up with a father who has served as the chief of the Letcher Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years, she developed a strong passion to be an accountable and dependable resource for people in times of need at a young age.
Jensen took her first CPR class in high school and has maintained her certification ever since. She has volunteered with the department since 2005, after taking Wildland Fire training in college. She became the department’s first certified female fire fighter in 2013 after she finished Fireman’s 1 and 2 training. Jensen also has done training with the local electrical coop and ethanol plant to be able to better assist with those emergency situations.
From 2014 to present, Jensen serves as the Letcher Fire Reserve Secretary. In this position she completes and submits all the fire/EMS reports to the state. She also plans and coordinates the Letcher Fire Reserve Annual Meeting, as well as helps the Letcher Fire Department with annual fundraising. Jensen has picked up and provided the meat for the annual poker tournament and annual Reserve meeting this last winter.
She also helped with the Fire Hall and Community Center building expansion fundraising by collecting donations, and the planning of a silent/live auction. As a part of the Letcher Volunteer Fire Department annual fall fish fry, she provided baked deserts, salads and help wherever help was needed.
Jensen stays active in the community by volunteering with the Mitchell Area Special Olympics, coaching equestrian and swimming. She also plays basketball and softball with the Special Olympic Athletes as a unified partner since 2008. She has also been a member of the Tormey Stach Post #93 Auxiliary since she was a baby.
Jensen is committed to the mission and vision of the department. She strives to be adaptable and dependable for any situation that may arise by maintaining certification requirements and actively seeking new educational opportunities. Jensen has assisted in structure fires, grassland fires, vehicle collisions and much more. On and off the job, Jensen is an individual who strives to display a high level of character and leadership at all times.
