His Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 3, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial and military honors by the Huron Veterans Council at the St. Martin’s Cemetery. Visitation with the family present was on Sunday afternoon, July 2, followed by a scripture prayer service at 4 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron; and one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church.
Jerome was born on July 21, 1928, in Dimock, to Fred and Rose (Weber) Grohs. They moved to Wessington Springs in 1936. Jerome graduated from the eighth grade and “joined the working class”. He was drafted into the US Army and entered service on March 28, 1951. After training, he served in Korea during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953 when he returned to South Dakota to work with his father on the farm.

They sold the farm in the fall of 1968 and moved the family to Watertown in the spring of 1969, where Jerome enrolled at Lake Area Vo-Tech. While attended Vo-Tech, Jerome obtained his GED and graduated in 1970 as a TV technician. After graduation, Jerome and family moved to Huron where he worked for the Music Center until his retirement at age 62.
On Dec. 29, 1981, his wife, Avis, passed away. He later remarried Shirley Brown on Jan. 20, 1984. Jerome and Shirley moved to SunQuest Village in 2007. Shirley passed away in 2012. Jerome moved to Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in 2015, where he resided until his passing.
