Marvis Jean Godber, 84, of Huron and formerly of Letcher, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, with burial at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Chapel.
Marvis Godber, daughter of Grant and Sylvia (Case) Tingle, was born June 2, 1932, in rural Plankinton. She attended country school south of Lane, attended school in Plankinton and graduated from Letcher High School. After her schooling, Marvis lived in Mitchell and was employed at Educator Supply.
She was united in marriage with Marvin Godber on Sept. 5, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Letcher. The couple lived on a farm in rural Letcher, where Marvis was a homemaker and helped on the farm. She later owned the Corner Café in Letcher from 1965 until the early 1980s. After her children were raised, she attended X-ray tech school and was employed with Dr. Hendrix. Marvis also worked as a substitute teacher in Letcher.
Marvis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served as church treasurer. She was an active lifetime member of the Letcher American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president, and was a school board member and the secretary of the Elliot Township Board.
Marvis is survived by her two children, Sandi (John) Schoenfelder of Huron, and Mark (Melissa) Godber of Tea; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, in 2011; her parents; two sisters, Lorraine Kaus and Verlyn Steichen; and three brothers, Arlen “Bud”, Ronald and Larry.
