Native Americans make annual trip down Highway 34

On an annual occurrence since 2005, Native American trail riders travel by horseback east from the Lower Brule Indian Reservation to the site of a mass hanging of 38 Native Americans in Mankato, Minn., which took place in 1862.
They make this trip during December to honor the men, women and children who were forced to march across the cold winter prairie either to the mass hanging in Mankato or to a large concentration camp of Dakota Indian families at Fort Snelling, Minn.
Shown here are 10 riders who traveled through Woonsocket on their annual trip this past Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 12. They should arrive in Mankato on Dec. 26.

Fedora cattle deaths under investigation

The November deaths of over 40 cattle on a farm south of Fedora are under investigation by multiple agencies.
The Miner County Sheriff’s office reported that 42 heifers and one bull died between Nov. 1 and Nov. 7 at the farm. Their cause of death is unknown at this time but authorities say the deaths are “definitely suspicious.”
Water samples from the farm were sent to North Dakota for testing, and tissue samples from dead cows were sent to Iowa. It is unclear when the test results will return.
The South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation and Sanborn County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation.

Hawks tumble TDA in game two

In their second game of the season, the SCW Blackhawks took control of the scoreboard in the second half on Thursday night, and came out with a win over Tripp/Delmont/Armour, 63-49.
Three players scored in double digits for the Blackhawks with Noah Dickson returning from an injury and leading the scoring with 15 points. Trey Weber had 14 points, and Tater Moody added 12. Trent Kingsbury came down with 12 rebounds and tossed 10 assists for a double-double on the night.
For the TDA Nighthawks, Micah Lau had a game high of 26 points, and his teammate Cade Gemar helped out with 12.
The Blackhawks saw their next action on Tuesday night at Sanborn Central in a double header against the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton Titans, and will then play Hitchcock/Tulare in a double header on Thursday, Dec. 28, in Woonsocket.
