Myah Selland was chosen as the state Girls Basketball Player of the Year at the Keloland and Sanford Pentagon All-Star weekend, held this past Saturday and Sunday in Sioux Falls.
The state’s top basketball talent is invited to the event, which includes an awards banquet and All-Star basketball game. Selland was one of five finalists vying for the Player of the Year award, two of whom she played against in the State “B” Championship game this past March.
Sully Buttes players, Chloe Lamb, a University of South Dakota recruit, and Racquel Wientjes, a future Black Hill State Yellowjacket, were also chosen as two of the five finalists for the award.
Anna Brecht of Sioux Falls Lincoln and Dru Gylten of St. Thomas More were the final two players up for the award. Brecht will play basketball at Green Bay, Wis., next year while Gylten will join the University of Utah’s womens team.
Selland will join the South Dakota State Jackrabbits next year on a full scholarship.
The awards ceremony and banquet were held Saturday evening in the Sanford Pentagon, where the five boy and five girl finalists were highlighted. Retired Detroit Piston and current ESPN NBA analyst Chauncey Billups was the keynote speaker at the event. The Boys Basketball Player of the Year is Ethan Freidel of Tea Area.
The All-Star basketball games were held Sunday, in which Selland’s team won, 86-62. Selland scored 11 points and had eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks, in just under 19 minutes on the court.
