The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs Post 5548 Teener baseball team won the region championship in Groton last week. 

In the first game of the tournament, they played Webster and won 17-2. They then played and beat Clark with a score of 9-2 to earn their place in the championship round.

On Tuesday, July 10, the Blackhawk Teeners snatched the region championship from the tournament host, Groton, with a score of 12-2.

The WWS Post 5548 Teener team will now play in the state tournament in Gregory this weekend. Their first game is at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 20, against Winner. They go into the state tournament with an impressive record of 18-1. The state tournament is scheduled to take place July 20-22, with the championship game scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sunday.

RACHEL LINDGREN, Sanborn Weekly Journal’s new staff member, has taken over Wanda Swenson’s position, which includes typing physical copies of news, writing the history section and weather, and, of course, proofreading.

As most of you know, as of the first of this year, the Sanborn Weekly Journal has been under new leadership with Tara and Rod Weber as owners and Carrie Howard as Editor/Publisher. As of June 11, the paper also has a new typist/proofer, Rachel Lindgren.

After Hillary Lutter sold the business, her mother, Wanda Swenson, who had been working for Hillary for five years, decided that she would also like to hang up her keyboard and red pens and join the rest of the retired members of society.

So, the staff asked certain people who they thought would be great for the job but were turned down. They then took the next step and advertised in the paper with no response for one week, and then, a glorious voice called into the office and asked if the position was still open. Everyone was elated because Rachel was actually someone they had considered talking to about the job, so it was even better that she contacted them. Wanda was especially overjoyed because she really wanted to be done, but she didn’t want to leave the paper short-staffed, and no matter what, she wanted the paper to be successful.

PIERRE – The AGC is proud to announce the winners of the 2018-2019 annual scholarship programs. Winners chosen must be enrolled in a two-year post-secondary school or college/university, majoring in a career field directly related to the construction industry.  In addition, applicants must achieve an above average academic achievement and be committed to working in South Dakota following graduation.

Garrett Larson of Woonsocket, who is currently attending SDSU, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

The Associated General Contractors of South Dakota Highway-Heavy-Utilities Chapter represents hundreds of firms which employ several thousand workers in the construction industry across South Dakota.  The AGC takes pride in our efforts to enhance workforce development and provide scholarships to help aid our members in finding the next generation of workers.
