Since the start of our nation with President George Washington, every military member has taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. The oath is administered upon joining the armed services and upon promotion. In 1977, Karen (Ferwerda) Klinkner and her twin sister, Kendra, took this oath and became officers in the U.S. Army. They were a part of the second class to allow women to be commissioned in the Army. A generation later, in 2005 and 2008, respectively, Karen administered this same oath to her daughters, Diane and Kristen, as they graduated college and joined the Army and the Air Force. Diane graduated from Artesian-Letcher High School in 2001 and Kristen in 2003.
