Nine players from the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket boys’ basketball team and their coach Matt Henriksen headed to Spearfish to play in the Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket boys’ varsity basketball camp that was held June 14-16. The games were played in the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center located on the BHSU campus. The first two days of the camp consisted of pool play with tournament play on the final day. Tournament bracket placement was based on how well each team did during pool play. Games consisted of 20-minute halves during pool play and 18-minute halves during tournament play. The boys that attended included Tater Moody, Noah Dickson, Malachi Bruce, Cayden Slykhuis, Andrew Lindgren, Tryce Slykhuis, Clay Olinger, Noah Wormstadt and Hayden Beigh.

The annual 4-H Special Foods Contest was held recently on May 29 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg. Ten 4-Hers spent the day showcasing their culinary talents.  Judging the contest this year were Margo Edwards and Maria Feldhaus, 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Miner County.

This unique contest gives the youth a chance to prepare a recipe from any of the five food groups.  4-Hers are challenged to learn about nutrition, prepare a menu, set up an attractive place setting, use proper food safety procedures and be judged on the final food product.  Youth are allowed a total of 90 minutes to prepare the recipe, complete a place setting and interview with the nutrition judge.

Purple: Wyatt Arhart – All-Star Pork Meatballs, Hope Baysinger – Egg Bake Cups, Shay Bechen – Strawberry Banana Smoothie, Lane Burkel – Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, Victoria Hoffman – Egg Bake, Brooklyn Larson – Strawberry Surprise Smoothie, Memphis Moody – Surprise Smoothie, Elisha Schultz – Vegetable Lo Mein, Isaiah Schultz – Moo Shu Vegetables, Cole Wilson – Peanut Butter Protein Delight

Morgan Schmiedt takes her turn at bat during the U16/18 softball games against Iroquois in Huron on Thursday. Schmiedt relieved Dayton Easton as pitcher for the second half of the second game to help secure the win for the Blackhawks.
