October 2019

For the second year in a row, the Sanborn County Extension Office was able to host a trapping workshop on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the 4-H Building in Forestburg. This opportunity was open to all interested adults and kids.  Darold Bitterman and Mike Piehl of Mitchell were on hand to lead the group through the various trapping techniques.

After discussing the different types of traps used in the area, the group was able to get actual hands-on experience when they headed outdoors. The youth were excited to look for animal tracks, trails and droppings in the area. Once trails were located, they spent time discussing the different options of where to set the traps.  Involvement in the process of looking and then watching Darold set actual traps helped the whole group gain knowledge, skill and understanding in trapping.

To end the workshop, County Commissioner Gary Blindauer generously donated a jack-knife, three live traps and snares to be given away at the workshop.  After the drawing and receiving these items, a very happy group of participants were excited to try their hand at trapping.

Hannah Terkildsen qualifies for this year’s State Cross Country meet

Blackhawks team displays best performance this season

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the SCW Cross Country team traveled to Gettysburg for their region meet to compete for a chance to run at the State Cross Country meet at the end of the month. This year, freshman Hannah Terkildsen placed eighth out of 36 runners, which qualified her for the state meet. The top 20 placers earn a trip to the state meet.

Although every male runner on the team ran their personal best time, none of them qualified to advance to the state meet this year. The boys running for SCW at the region meet were Jeffrey Boschee placing 30th, Noah Terkildsen who placed 43rd, Braxton Gentles who came in at 51st and Andrew Lindgren who finished in 54th place. There were 66 runners for the boys’ race.

Hannah Terkildsen will run on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Huron at the State Cross Country meet. The race starts at 2:30 p.m.
