Arlis G. Hetland, 92, of Mitchell, formerly of Artesian, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 4, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Artesian with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Arlis G. Hetland, daughter of Andrew and Clara (Olsen) Knutson, was born July 13, 1927, in rural Forestburg. She grew up on the family farm in rural Forestburg and attended country school. After her schooling, Arlis helped area families with housekeeping, cooking and sewing.
Arlis was united in marriage with Robert Hetland on Nov. 30, 1947, in Elizabethtown, Ky. The couple lived on the family farm north of Artesian. Arlis continued to live on the farm until after Robert’s death. She then lived with her daughter, Sally, in Sioux Falls for three years and then seven years at Countryside in Mitchell.
She will be remembered as a fantastic cook, and a talented seamstress. Arlis always had a smile on her face and was a very kind person.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Artesian. At the church, Arlis was involved as the chairman of the funeral and luncheon committee.
Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, Sally (Al) Larimer of Sioux Falls, Betty (Dennis) Marler of Maple Grove, Minn., Bobbie (Tom) Dold of Howard, Julie (Craig Olson) Scott of Sioux Falls, and Rob (Jane) Hetland Jr. of Artesian; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hetland; a grandson in infancy, David Jon Scott; a son-in-law, Jon Scott; three sisters and four brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.
