Lila Jean Tiede was born on Dec. 13, 1930, in Lennox to Peter and Aileen (Patridge) Javers. She had two sisters, Evelyn and Janet.
While growing up and attending school, she helped in the family business, the Lennox Greenhouse and Flower Shop. Lila graduated from Lennox High School in 1949, after missing her fifth grade year due to pneumonia. During her school years, she was an active and talented singer, singing in the school choir, city band and church.
Lila met Ronald Tiede on a blind date. They were married on Nov. 20, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church in Lennox. Ronald was soon drafted in the army and Lila stayed home in Lennox, giving birth to the first of five children. Lila joined her husband in Fairbanks, Alaska until returning to Lennox, where she went back to work in the family greenhouse.
In 1965, they moved to Wessington Springs. Lila and her husband operated a greenhouse and The Plant and Plaster Barn. When a devastating fire took their home five miles north of Wessington Springs, they moved to town, where she went to work at the Wessington Springs Hospital as the food service supervisor. Ron was taken suddenly by a fatal heart attack in 1982.
With her daughter, Lisa, Lila operated the Gazebo and Garden, a gift shop and greenhouse. Lila was active in the Wessington Springs Legion Auxiliary, Quilt Club and Red Hat Society. After retiring, Lila lived in the Hillcrest Heights apartments. Due to health issues, she moved into the Kimball assisted living facility to be closer to family for three years, then to PVHC in 2017 for full care.
