Maryana S. Jones, 87, died on May 30, 2021, surrounded by family.
A private interment will take place at Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. A celebration of life is being planned, probably in September, and will be announced once a date is set.
Maryana Peters was born in Letcher, on March 13, 1934, to parents Helen E. (Cashman) and Theodore Peters. Graduating from high school in 1952, she worked in a record store in nearby Mitchell and attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. Deciding teaching was not for her, she moved to Rapid City where she graduated from the National College of Business in 1954 and then worked at an insurance agency in Mitchell.
Maryana met Richard “Dick” Jones at a VFW Dance in Mitchell. They were married in Letcher in December of 1956. They moved to Idaho in 1960. Maryana was a homemaker until 1965 when she became the first school secretary in the Blaine County School District at Wood River Valley in Idaho and worked there for 27 years. Maryana enjoyed the outdoors, camping, riding motorcycle and snowmobiles and hunting with her husband. She was an excellent cook. She led her son’s Boy Scout troop and attended her children’s school sporting events.
After retirement in 1991, Maryana volunteered with the American Red Cross and was honored as the Volunteer of the Year several times. In addition to her volunteer work, Maryana loved participating in charity walks and going to lunch with friends, attending water aerobics, working in her flowerbeds, collecting all kinds of sweatshirts and crazy socks, visiting with her neighbors, and walking her dog. She participated in a neighborhood TNR (trap, neuter, release) program for the feral cats and supported animal welfare organizations.
Maryana is survived by her kids, Randy (Karin) Jones of Orangevale, Calif., and Kim (John Rollins) Jones of Boise, Idaho; her brother, Frank Peters of Coralville, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; a special cousin, Roger Cashman; and two step-grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 1984.
