November 2022

For the fourth year in a row, Sanborn County 4-H was able to sponsor the popular Trapping Workshop for youth and adults.  This captivating workshop was held on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the 4-H Building in Forestburg with 17 youth and four adults attending.  Trapping experts, Darold Bitterman and Mike Piehl, were on hand to share their vast knowledge on the subject.

The event started with a skill-a-thon where the group worked to identify different animal footprints in snow. Then, Darold discussed the different types of traps and how to determine which traps to use. The group learned how to remove the fat from hides, to stretch the fur to dry it, how to clean and dip traps and how to set the traps in the ground.  A highlight of the workshop included watching Mike skin the fur off a 58 lb. beaver.

Thanks to the generous donation of a sponsor, all of the participants were able to receive their own trap.

The week of Nov. 13-19 was this year’s American Education Week. Sanborn Central School celebrated with different activities, but the highlight of the week was inviting community and family members to come to the school and join the students in playing games and enjoying cookies for the Cookies and Connecting with Kids event. It took place in the school’s gym on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The Woonsocket School also celebrated with different activities, but they connected with the community and their families with doughnuts for breakfast, and they invited parents, grandparents, older siblings, etc. to join the students for breakfast on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 15.

There was plenty to celebrate with these events and the whole week of American Education Week, as education is strong and evident in the hearts and minds of the students in Sanborn County schools.

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Red Group 4-H Club celebrated American Education Week by thanking and honoring all the staff at Woonsocket School, as well as some school staff at Wessington Springs, Mitchell and home-schooled families. Club members made gifts of trail mix with a note attached that said, “Thank you for leading us down the trail of success!” along with personal appreciation notes. They also put M&M’s in the breakrooms for the “Magnificent & Marvelous” staff, along with brownies.
