The SDVFW 14U and 16U Letcher Hawks Teener Baseball team hosted the Alexandria Angels for games in Letcher last Thursday. This game was the inaugural home game on the updated field for the new team.
The 14U game was a hard-fought battle ending in a close 12-13 loss to the Angels. The Hawks jumped off to an early 5-1 lead in the first inning. The Angels scored five runs in the second inning to move ahead 6-5, but the Hawks responded with a run in the third inning to tie up the game at 6-6. Strong hitting in the fifth inning by both teams saw the Hawks back on top at 10-9, but the Angels pulled away in the sixth inning to end the game on top. Pitchers in the 14U game were Parker Ettswold, Payton Uecker, Brendan Evans, and McCoy Schulz.
In the 16U game, the Hawks struggled against an experienced Alexandria team just coming off a spring high school baseball season and lost 0-10. Taking the mound for the Hawks were Cody Slykhuis and Jeff Boschee.
The SDVFW 14U Letcher Hawks played in the Mitchell Baseball 13U/14U Teener Tournament this past weekend, opening with a game against Mitchell White. The Hawks lost the lead late in the 2-6 defeat to Mitchell on Friday. The game was tied at one with Mitchell batting in the bottom of the fourth when they singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run. The Hawks lost despite out-hitting Mitchell five to four. Mitchell got things started in the first inning with a ground out that scored one run. In the top of the third inning, the Hawks tied things up at one, scoring with a single by Oscar Anderson. Mitchell pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. McCoy Schulz was on the pitcher’s mound for the Hawks. The lefty lasted five innings, allowing four hits and six runs while striking out six and walking one. Bryce Larson went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hawks in hits.
