Fashion Revue Contest held

By Sherryl Rankin

Achievement Days will soon be here on August 3-5! The 4-H grounds are busy with final Youth-In-Action events and preparations.  One of those events included the Fashion Revue Contest which was held on Wednesday, July 19.

This year, the contest featured an authentic traditional Ukrainian outfit made by Senior 4-H member, Ashlee Hanson. She chose to replicate an outfit that was worn by her grandmother many years ago. Also unique was a pair of pants made by Sophie Kelly. She recycled and sewed the pants from an old coat.

The Fashion Revue Contest is an opportunity for youth to model complete outfits that are either made or selected by the exhibitor. Participants are judged on their interview, personal presentation, modeling, appearance of outfit/garment and responses to judges’ questions. This year we had four contestants who kept judge Cindy Larson busy with a total of eight outfits.

Competing in the Fashion Revue Contest were the following 4-H members along with their ribbon placings:

Purple – Ashlee Hanson, Anna Hunter, Sophie Kelly (3), Timothy Kelly (2);

Blue – Timothy Kelly.

On Monday, July 17, the SDVFW 16U Letcher Hawks traveled to Canistota to take a tough hit losing to the Canistota/Freeman Sticks 0-16. Wyatt Anderson started the game pitching for the Hawks. He gave up five hits and four runs over three innings, striking out two and walking no one. Offensively, the Hawks were led by Bryce Larson and Payton Uecker who each had one hit in the loss.

The following night, the Hawks bounced back and dominated the field when they traveled to Chamberlain for a doubleheader and added two wins to their record. In the first game, Oscar Anderson and Payton Uecker led the Hawks at the plate with two hits each. Bryce Larson, Oscar Anderson, Grant Edwards, Wyatt Anderson, Clay Moody, Parker Ettswold and McCoy Schulz each drove in one run for the Letcher win. The Hawks ran wild on the base paths, accumulating seven stolen bases for the 8-2 win over Chamberlain.

For the Hawks’ defense, Larson started the game on the mound. He allowed four hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out four and walking four. His teammates helped out with turning a double play, and they were sure handed in the field with no errors in the game.
