After weather had postponed their event, the Woonsocket fourth grade class, taught by Mrs. Bailey Deinert, held their student showcase on Friday, Jan. 6. Each student invited important adults in their life to the showcase, which was made up of two parts.

During the first part of the year, Mrs. Deinert introduced the class to different versions of the fairy tale “Cinderella,” including the original story, a couple modern versions “Skeleton Cinderella” and “Cindy Ellen,” and an adaptation that Mrs. Deinert wrote while in college. The students were then assigned to write their own version of Cinderella using their own take on the popular tale. At the showcase, students sat in small groups at tables in the Woonsocket School commons area with their guest adults, where they read their stories out loud for their group. The students used a variety of themes in their tales. Some stories involved “Cinderella” on the farm, “Cinderella” in a barrel race, “Cinderella” as a penguin, “Cinderella” as a racecar driver, among many other equally creative themes. The fourth graders showed much imagination and enthusiasm in their stories.

After a quick snack break, the fourth-grade class moved their showcase event into the Woonsocket School gymnasium, where their guests were shown five videos created by the students who worked in small groups to produce business ideas that the community could use. This project was inspired by the book that Mrs. Deinert read to them called The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies about siblings who create competing lemonade businesses. The student businesses highlighted at the showcase included a dog and cat daycare, a cleaning business, and an assortment of stores. The students used Adobe Spark to present their business plans to their guests. The showcase was a great way to wrap up the second quarter and display some of the hard work the fourth graders had accomplished.
