On Monday, April 17, the sixth-grade class was honored with a DARE graduation after completing the six-week Drug Abuse Resistance Education program with Huron police officer, Mark Johnson, who has been teaching the DARE program for 13 years.
The graduation ceremony was kicked off with Sawyer Larson welcoming the guests to the event. Officer Johnson then introduced himself and the three sixth graders whose DARE essays were featured at the graduation. The essays summarized what the students learned during the program and the importance of the skills that they had developed. The students whose essays were selected to be highlighted read them to the group. Those students were Trevor Johnson, Cheyann Larson and Kobie Schley. Following the essays, Officer Johnson handed each of the sixth graders their DARE graduation certificates and shared some closing thoughts for the parents, family and friends in the audience on the significance of adult role models in the lives of youth. Tayton Anderson ended the ceremony by thanking everyone who came and inviting them to enjoy refreshments in the commons area.
