Every year around Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which falls on March 2, schools across the United States promote and celebrate reading for a week entitled “Read Across America Week.” This year the week was celebrated March 3-7 at both schools in Sanborn County. Each school had designated days for the students to dress up according to the theme for the day, and special events where guests were welcomed.

Pictured above right are students with their invited guests enjoying breakfast together at Sanborn Central on Friday morning.

In Woonsocket, during the week, a masked reader was invited to every classroom of the elementary. Pictured below right is one of the masked readers (Kaitlyn Aldrich) and her assistant, Ivy Knudson, who held Aldrich’s book while she read to the fourth graders in disguise. After each masked reader was done reading, the students in the classroom had to try to guess who the reader in their room was.

The purpose of Read Across America Week is to inspire children to read, celebrate reading and promote literacy. It also aims to build community and encourage cultural awareness. It is celebrated on or around Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 because his books have inspired readers for decades and continue to do so today.
