The Letcher American Legion Auxiliary held their annual membership supper Monday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. with food provided by the officers. The Legion men were invited to join them.
After the meal, the two Sanborn Central girls that attended Girls State in June at the USD campus in Vermillion gave a very interesting presentation and answered questions. Shelby Selland and Haley Degen talked about the experience of being a Girls Stater, learning how government works, the offices they ran for and the speakers they had, including Gov. Daugaard, Sen. John Thune, Rep. Kristi Noem and others. They made lots of new friends and had a great time and would encourage every girl that gets a chance to go and have fun.
The regular meeting was then called to order by President Sandi Ruml. Others present were Shirley Ruml, Pat Nelson, Sherri Stekl, Edith Moe, Mary Luckett, Lois Clarambeau, Kathy Northrup, Nancy Kelly and Jane Amick.
Letters from the District 6 president, Theresa Maeschen, were read by President Ruml.It was announced that the District 6 fall meeting will be held Friday, Sept. 27 at the Ethan Legion Hall.
Other business discussed was the new goals set by national for membership. They want each unit to get their goal number plus three new members for each of the next five years to try to get one million members by 2019 for the Auxiliary’s 100th birthday.
Discussion was also held regarding the gifts for the veterans in Hot Springs. The unit usually sends about 30 $3-$5 gifts to the Veteran’s Home. The date to send has been changed from Nov. 1 to Oct. 1. Due to the fact that October was coming up soon and the Unit just received this information, a motion was made to send a monetary donation instead of purchasing gifts for the residents this year. The motion was seconded and passed to send the money.
With no other business Chaplin Pat Nelson read a prayer and President Ruml adjourned the meeting. The next meeting is Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.
