Esther Underwood, 78, Mitchell, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Memorial services were Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Mitchell Wesleyan Church in Mitchell. Arrangements were under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Esther Irene Underwood was born Sept. 12, 1935 at Garretson to Ray and Anna (Wranek) Adams. She graduated from Letecher High School and then attended the Multnomah School of Bible in Portland, Ore. On May 22, 1954, she married Donald Underwood at Vashon, Wash.
She worked and taught in Washington and North Dakota before returning to Mitchell to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; two daughters, Michele Underwood-Garcia and husband, Jerry, of Los Angeles, Calif., Annette McCall and husband, Jim, of Auburn, Wash.; one son, Shawn Underwood of Yakima, Wash.; brothers, Clarence (Pat) Adams, Newcastle, Wyo., Art Adams, Mitchell, Ken (Judy) Adams, Hartford, Gary (Linda) Adams, Marathon City, Wis., David (Dorothy) Adams, Marysville, Wash.; sisters, Alta (Mel) Gering, Oklahoma City, Okla., Nancy (Jack) Kirchmeier, JoAnn (Stan) Hofwolt, Betty Christensen and Diana Wick all of Mitchell; two grandsons; two step-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
