Genevieve (Gen) Nielsen, 89, of Woonsocket, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Basham Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Interment was in Eventide Cemetery, Woonsocket.
Genevieve Elizabeth West was born on March 30, 1924 to Arthur and Margaret (Berens) West. She married Arne Nielsen on Dec. 23, 1939. They had a son, Arthur and two daughters, Myrna and Dorthea.
Gen was very active in her church, teaching Sunday school for the graham cracker class (ages 3 to 5). She was also the janitor at the church for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Prairie View Care Center Auxiliary for many years.
Gen did painting and shingling with Cunninghams and did housework for different people, working for the Davises for 45 years. She loved to send cards to people and when she entered Firesteel Healthcare Center in June of 2011, she told them that her hobby was sending cards.
Gen is survived by two daughters, Myrna (LeRoy) Peterson of Woonsocket and Dorthea (Ray) Berlin of Mitchell; and many who considered her their Mom; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several that called her Grandma; and many cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arne in 1988; her son, Arthur in 1992; two brothers; and all her aunts and uncles.
