Joseph “Joe” William Schmit, 86, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Woonsocket with Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket. Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 12 from 5-7 at Basham Funeral Home in Woonsocket and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Joe was born June 2, 1929, to Michael and Agnes (Rauenhorst) Schmit. He had four brothers and one sister: Bernard (Ruth), Henry (Elsie), Francis (Eileen), and Bill (Mable) Schmit and Vine (Perry) Emmett.
On June 25, 1955, he married Avis Rumelhart. They were blessed with two children, Laurie (Jim) Boom of Woonsocket and Darrell Schmit of Huron.
Joe worked for 24 years for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks and then for several years in the woodworking room at Van Dykes in Woonsocket. He loved auctions, refinishing furniture, hunting and giving friends a bad time.
He is survived by his children; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Avis; his parents; his brothers and his sister; and his step-father, Harry Hass.
