Logan Effling and Byron Jesson of Sanborn Central were runners-up in the 26th Annual Business Plan Competition.
The statewide competition is sponsored by the SD Bankers Foundation and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.
The concept behind the Business Plan Competition is to take an idea for a business that could be started by a student and transfer it into a business plan. To help interested persons pursue this opportunity, notice of the competition went to all South Dakota high schools last fall, resulting in the submission of 51 business plans. A panel of six judges reviewed the written plans and called seven students with six finalist plans to Pierre for the oral interpretation part of the competition.
Effling and Jesson’s idea, The Citronet, is a net that uses nylon, which is more durable and flexible than standard nets, blended with Citronella oils that repel insects. The two were awarded $300 for their entry.
The seven students, parents and advisors were invited to attend the annual legislative reception and dinner honoring South Dakota’s constitutional officers and the legislature to receive awards from Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels in recognition of their entrepreneurial efforts.
Kayla Olson, also a student at Sanborn Central, was chosen as an alternate and received $100.
