Funeral services were held Thursday evening in the Woonsocket School Gym for long-time Sanborn County Deputy Ernie Anderson.
Anderson passed away May 14 at the age of 63, leaving his wife of 39 years, Patty, a daughter, Diedra, her husband, James, two granddaughters and many other relatives and friends.
The well-liked deputy spent 20 years with the sheriff’s office before taking early retirement in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. A large gathering of friends and colleagues from near and far were present Thursday evening to honor Anderson’s memory.
Anderson also served as an EMT, was the Director of Emergency Management and County Coroner, was a Civil Defense servant, volunteer firemen and dog catcher, and was a member of the Masons and the Huron SWAT team.
Before becoming a part of the Woonsocket community, Anderson worked in law enforcement in Herreid, Webster and Waubay. He grew up near Glenham and graduated from Mobridge High School, where he was the tallest basketball player in the state.
