Sanborn Central School has formed a powerlifting team. According to powerlifting rules, schools are unable to compete cooperatively, so Woonsocket and Sanborn Central will compete against one another at meets. The teams’ coaches can help either team, however.
The Sanborn Central Powerlifting team consists of Eric Ruml, Ethan Johnson, Alex Wormstadt, Kyle Zoss, Aiden Wormastadt, Noah Wormstadt and Weston Baysinger. Catherine Bechen also lifts every morning. Their team coach is Mr. Corey Flatten.
The team will be competing in a weightlifting competition Saturday, Feb. 4 in Sioux Falls. The first meet that the team went to was in Brandon Valley. All the participants agreed it was a learning experience.
The lifters train after school from 3:20 p.m. to about 4:30 p.m., and some are so dedicated that they stay until 5:30 p.m.
Powerlifting coach Mr. Flatten said, “They started the powerlifting program for students that do not participate in winter sports to better themselves and stay busy during the winter and not sit around. … The reason why they lift is so that they are also ready for the next school year’s football season, so that they are in shape and to gain muscle and confidence about themselves.”
