Approximately 20 kids signed up for the summer reading program at the Woonsocket School and Community Library. The theme for this year’s program was Adventure Begins at Your Library. Different age groups had to read a certain number of pages by July 25 in order to qualify for the end-of-the-summer party, which was held on Monday, July 29. The goals were 250 pages for three-year-olds to preschoolers, 400 pages for kindergartners to second graders, 500 pages for third through sixth graders and 700 pages for any high schoolers. Twelve kids met their goal and got to enjoy the party held at the library last week. Those who attended the party were treated with a free lunch and several outdoor games. They also got to pick up their prizes earned for reaching their reading goals.

Sanborn County baseball finds new life in Letcher

Stories report historical proof of baseball’s success in the county

Organized baseball has been a source of summer entertainment for decades in Sanborn County, and there have been many years of success in its history. The Pony Hills Amateur League was viable as early as 1948, and probably earlier, when there were teams from Letcher, Virgil, Alpena, Artesian, Woonsocket, Wessington Springs, Danforth, Forestburg and Lane, and each town had its own field for games to be played on every Sunday. Common names of players for Woonsocket’s team in 1948 were Moe Authier, Don Reider, A. Krause, R. Krause, D. Krause and Oas. For Letcher, they were Ike Petesch, Case and Crockett. In that same year, there was a junior-junior team from Woonsocket that made it to the State Tournament. The Woonsocket News reported that their team was under the management of Father Kelly, and major players on that team were John Ball, Patterson and Gerleman.

It was a very exciting day on July 22 in Woonsocket!  Game Fish & Parks came to present a Fishing Workshop to an eager group of participants. Bringing a trailer filled with around 100 fishing rods, Levi Gebhart from Game Fish & Parks met the 55 youth at the Woonsocket Community Center to start the event. Gebhart shared knowledge on different types of rods, the anatomy of fish and how to identify fish native to South Dakota. Moving on from there, the group learned how to tie three different knots and were able to practice their knot tying.

By 10 a.m., the group moved over to Lake Prior to get their fishing poles and bait. It was quite a sight to see! Especially exciting was the addition of seven residents from the nursing home who were able to come and join. Anglers positioned themselves all around the south side of the lake. Many preferred fishing for the smaller fish closer to shore, while others went after the bigger fish. Success was seen on all levels! A big shoutout to Game Fish & Parks for giving the community this wonderful opportunity.
