4-H

Sanborn County 4-H is celebrating the Centennial (100th) Birthday of 4-H in Sanborn County. There will be a table available at Achievement Days, where memorabilia will be showcased of 4-H from the past 100 years. If anyone has something they would like to display, it can be dropped off on Thursday, Aug. 4, during the static exhibit judging between 4-7 p.m.

On Friday evening, everyone is invited to stop by the Centennial Birthday to enjoy a grilled burger or hotdog meal, including cake and ice cream, from 6-7 p.m.  Check out the 4-H member exhibits while you are there. The Ag Olympics will follow the meal from 7-8 p.m.; plan to enter a team or just watch for entertainment.

The final Sanborn County 4-H Youth-In-Action event (before Achievement Days) was held on Wednesday, July 20, at the 4-H Building in Forestburg. The Fashion Revue Contest is an opportunity for youth to model complete outfits that are either made or selected by the exhibitor. Participants are judged on their interview, personal presentation, modeling, appearance of outfit/garment and responses to judges’ questions. This year’s eight contestants kept the two judges, Ruth Ann Olinger and Cindy Larson, busy with a total of 18 outfits!

Competing in the Fashion Revue Contest were the following 4-H members along with their ribbon placings:

Purple – Paige Anderson (3), Lane Burkel (3), Ashlee Hanson, Brooklyn Larson (2);

Blue – Ty Burkel, Sophie Kelly (2), Timothy Kelly (2);

Red – Chris Burkel, Ty Burkel, Timothy Kelly;

White –  Chris Burkel.

Do you know the difference between freeze branding and heat branding? Can you identify the different types of weeds which grow in our area? If you were one of the privileged spectators at the recent 4-H Public Presentation Contest on July 13, you will know the answer to these questions. With amazing confidence and skill, 17 Sanborn County 4-Hers presented a wide range of topics and knowledge. By far the most popular topic this year was poultry. Spectators learned how to clean and show eggs, the different breeds of chickens, how to care for poultry, the parts of the chicken and the correct way to do showmanship. It was an amazing testament to the talent and expertise of our 4-H youth.

Judging the event this year were Jill Calmus and Cindy Larson.
