4-H

By Sherryl Rankin

Do you know the correct way to fold a napkin for a place setting? Can you name the six main nutrients and their functions? (Hint… here’s the nutrients: water, protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.) Now, can you tell me the amount of food that you need from each food group (for your age and physical activity level) every day?  Tough questions for most people.  But in Sanborn County, nine 4-Hers took on the challenge to answer them when they competed in the Special Foods Contest held on July 20 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg.

This unique contest gives the youth a chance to prepare a recipe from any of the five food groups. Members of 4-H are then challenged to learn about nutrition, prepare a menu, set up an attractive place setting, use proper food safety procedures and be judged on the final food product. Youth are allowed a total of 90 minutes to prepare the recipe, complete a place setting and interview with the nutrition judge.

Judging the contest this year were Paula Linke and Maria Feldhaus, 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Miner County.  Results for the 2020 Special Foods Contest and the special dishes prepared are as follows:

Purple – Kaylee Adams, Banana-Strawberry Smoothie; Sury Bechen, Sunrise Surprise Smoothie; Ramsey Fouberg, Surprise Smoothie; Victoria Hoffman, Pizza Meat Cups; Brooklyn Larson,  Incredible Edible Eggbake; Megan Linke,  One Pot Cheeseburger Casserole; Isaiah Schultz, South of the Border Stuffed Avocados;

Blue – Miley Adams, Berry Green Smoothie; Shay Bechen, Twice Baked Potato Taco Hot Dish.

Do you know how long it takes to incubate an egg? Can you explain the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian? Have you heard of zebra mussels and the damage they can do in lakes? How many flowers can you identify? If you were one of the privileged spectators at the recent 4-H Public Presentation Contest on July 13, you will know the answers to these questions.  With amazing confidence and skill, Sanborn County 4-Hers presented a wide range of topics and knowledge. Subjects ranged from shooting sports to beef production to construction tools to water safety!  It was an amazing testament to the talent and expertise of our 4-H youth.

Judging this wonderful event were Jennifer Larson and Jessica Ronning. Purple ribbons were awarded to all of these deserving 4-Hers:

4-H Fashion Revue Contest held

By Sherryl Rankin

Hitting the fashion runway on July 16 at the 4-H Building in Forestburg were thirteen amazing 4-Hers. These 13 contestants kept the two judges, Georgialee Quail and Cindy Larson, busy with a total of 24 outfits!

4-Hers participating in the Fashion Revue Contest can choose between modeling a Selected Outfit or a Constructed Outfit. A Selected Outfit is a complete outfit that they have purchased to create a total look. While in a Constructed Outfit, the 4-H member must construct one or more garments that make up a complete outfit. In both cases, the outfits must be well-constructed, fit and complement the wearer.  Participants are asked questions like why did you choose this outfit, how does it fit into your wardrobe, and where do you plan to wear it.

Competing in the Fashion Revue Contest were the following 4-H members along with their ribbon placings:

Purple:  Kaylee Adams (2), Miley Adams (2), Sury Bechen (2), Lane Burkel (2), Hudson Fouberg, Ramsey Fouberg, Ashlee Hanson, Alexis Kelly (2), Sophie Kelly (2), Brooklyn Larson (2), Delaney Zoss;

Blue: Ty Burkel, Alexis Kelly, Sophie Kelly, Timothy Kelly (2);

Red: Ty Burkel.
