4-H

A CENTRAL Electric Cooperative employee explains electricity and efficiency to youth attending Farmers Union/4-H Day Camp in Forestburg.

Forestburg – South Dakota Farmers Union and 4-H joined together for a day of learning and “Cooperating…For a Brighter Tomorrow.” 4-H youth educated on multiple topics including proper table settings, food measurements, photography, and other opportunities for 4-H projects.  Youth spent the day learning about the history of cooperatives and cooperative careers, the impact cooperatives have on our everyday life, and talking about where food comes from. Team challenges, games, songs and crafts made up the afternoon.

The youth enjoyed learning about cooperatives through a co-op fair with Central Electric, Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, Agtegra, Dakotaland Feeds, National Information Systems Cooperative (NISC), and Santel Communications.  Lunch was sponsored in part by Woony Foods/AWG Cooperative, Farmers Elevator and Dakotaland Federal Credit Union.   The day was organized by Sanborn County Farmers Union Director Pat Carsrud, and Farmers Union Insurance provided a T-shirt to all attendees.

Sanborn County 4-H recently held their annual 4-H Special Foods Contest on May 23. Thirteen 4-Hers spent the day showcasing their culinary talents. Judging the contest this year were Margo Edwards, Paula Linke and Maria Feldhaus, 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Miner County.

This unique contest gives the youth a chance to prepare a recipe from any of the five food groups. One requirement is that three ingredients must be measured during the contest in front of the judge.  Oftentimes, first time participants will choose something simple, such as a smoothie.  During the contest, 4-Hers are tested on their nutritional knowledge and must answer questions from the judges.  Other elements of the contest include planning a menu and displaying a table setting to go along with the special dish.  The variety of the table settings vary greatly year to year and often showcase bright colors and themes.
