Area News

Over the past several years, Sanborn County 4-H has invited Darold Bitterman and Mike Piehl to present a trapping workshop to youth and adults in the area.  It has been a great opportunity to learn from two experts in the field.  This year’s event was held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the 4-H building in Forestburg, and eight youth and five adults attended.

Participants began the trapping workshop by identifying animals that can be trapped in South Dakota and the different types of traps. This was a great starting point for Bitterman as he was able to explain in greater detail how the traps worked and why you use them for different animals.

Later in the workshop, the group moved outdoors and received firsthand knowledge in the natural setting.  Deciding where to set a trap requires thinking and learning the different behaviors of the various animals.  Five traps were set up outside and individuals were challenged to find them. It was a great teaching tool. As a new trap was uncovered, time was spent learning where it was set, how it was set up and why it was put there. Lots of questions were asked as the group discovered the differences between traps.

There is a lot to know about trapping animals properly, so these workshops are beneficial in helping locals learn how to trap properly and help control the varmint population in Sanborn County and the surrounding area.

Army Veteran and Woonsocket Legion Post 29 member David Kogel was honored to be part of the Midwest Honor Flight in September.  Midwest Honor Flight recognizes American veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and fellow veterans, with the current focus on those who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  A guardian flies with each veteran to provide assistance and help the veterans have a safe, memorable and rewarding experience.  Fellow Veteran Agapito Aviles served as Dave’s guardian.

Dave served in the Vietnam War for 11 months as a mechanic. He shares that taking the Honor Flight was an awesome experience and encourages any veterans who have the opportunity to take the trip to do so.  Dave especially enjoyed the visit to the Vietnam Wall and receiving the thanks, recognition and welcome home that Vietnam veterans did not receive when they returned home from the war.

The change in weather and fewer daylight hours definitely helped create the eerie scenery needed for the festive Halloween season. With cooler temperatures and overcast skies, the thrill of the spooky season was in the air. With Woonsocket’s junior class putting together a Haunted House in a shed at the Rassel residence as a prom fundraiser, the annual Trunk-or-Treat events in Woonsocket, Artesian and Letcher and the FFA Halloween Festival held over the weekend, there was Halloween fun to be had for any age, even before the actual holiday on Oct. 31. Adults had options, as well, with parties at people’s homes and local establishments hosting costume parties with prizes for those who were most creative.

With Halloween behind us for 2023, we can now look forward to the holidays that tend to bring on family gatherings, great food and, hopefully, charitable works. Although some dread this time of year because of the work, time and money that goes into organizing time with loved ones, it is important to keep in mind that there are many people who would give anything to have someone to spend the holidays with, so be thankful for and appreciative of all the blessings you have received.
