Edwin Lutz

Garretson

Edwin Lutz, 96, of Garretson and formerly of Plankinton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.  

Mass of Christian burial was Thursday, July 29, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. Burial was in Mizpah Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, July 28, at Will Funeral Chapel.

Edwin was born on Feb. 16, 1925, to Lawrence and Ruth (Jones) Lutz. He graduated from Plankinton High School in 1943.

On Sept. 12, 1953, Edwin married Barbara Wolf in Woonsocket, and to this union, five children were born.  He worked for the city of Plankinton for thirty-three years before retiring. 

Edwin enjoyed pheasant hunting, reading western books, riding horses, and attending auction sales. Edwin was a blood donor throughout his life. He was a member of the American Legion. He was also a longtime member of the Plankinton Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Doug (Martha) Lutz, Sandra (Mark) Friedrichs, Marcia (Mike) Lachnit, Deb (Gary) Hanson, and Trish (Paul) Bouwman; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. 

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Melvin, Robert, and Tom; and one sister, Esther.

Tom Greenway

Mitchell

Tom Greenway, 88, of Mitchell, died Friday, July 30, 2021, surrounded by family in the home he was born in. 

A visitation was held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Bittner Funeral Chapel.  Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the downtown gym in Mt. Vernon. Burial followed at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Tom was born Oct. 29, 1932, to William and Elsie (Swancott) Greenway. He attended Beulah 24 Country School. Tom graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1950. He was drafted into the Korean War in 1953 and was stationed in the mountains of northern Japan, serving as an instructor for military mountaineering and cold weather training. He married Janice Miller on March 18, 1956, in Bonilla.  They shared their life with four children on their farm northwest of Mitchell. Tom spent his lifetime on the farm, operating a dairy, hog, beef, and crop operation.

Tom was involved in the Davison County Commission and Planning and Zoning Board, James River Conservation Sub-District, MRC Rail Authority, and Mt. Vernon Fire District. Tom was a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon American Legion, longtime 4-H leader, and member of the Twin Rivers Old Iron Association. He was inducted into Heroes Field at Mt. Vernon in 2018. He was an avid restorer of John Deere two-cylinder tractors.

Tom is survived by his sons, Brad (Peggy) Greenway of Mitchell and Doug (Janet) Greenway of Mitchell; daughter, Lori (Matt) Standafer of Burnsville, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Julie Greenway of Mt. Vernon; ten grandchildren including Jenni (John Baysinger) Greenway of Woonsocket; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lavelle DeKramer; and sister-in-law, Cherie Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; parents, William and Elise; sons, Alan and Brian (in infancy) Greenway; brothers, William Greenway and Giles Greenway; sisters, Gwendolyn Tillotson and Elsie Anthony; mother and father-in-law, Grace and Harry Miller; sisters-in-law, Lilas Greenway and Lillian Greenway; brothers-in-law, Loy Tillotson, Dale DeKramer, and Dean Miller; and many farm dogs, all named ‘Buddy.’

Maudene Hohbach

Mitchell

Maudene Hohbach, 86, of Mitchell, died Sunday, July 25, 2021, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were Friday, July 30, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was Thursday, July 29, at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Maudene Hohbach was born Dec. 1, 1934, in Vinita, Okla., to Charles and Nola (Hagebusch) Kuder. Maudene moved to South Dakota in 1947 with her family. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1952. Maudene married Donald Hohbach in November of 1952. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where Donald was in the Air Force. Following Donald being honorably discharged, they moved back to South Dakota.

Maudene had several jobs over the years, including working at Randall’s, JC Penney, and K-Mart. She retired from K-Mart in 1996. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Maudene was a fan of the Mitchell Kernels and Minnesota Twins. She loved attending her grandchildren’s musical and sporting events. She also loved gardening. Maudene’s favorite pastimes were camping, collecting angels, crocheting, and sewing. She loved dogs, especially her Shih-Tzus.

Maudene is survived by her children, Diana (Denis) Slepikas of Huron, Dan Hohbach of Mitchell, Doug (Penny) Hohbach of Letcher; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; sisters, Carolyn Damon and Charlene (Chuck) Reinhart; brothers, Lloyd (Katherine) Kuder and Eldon (Kathy) Kuder; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Hohbach; parents; granddaughter, Alison Slepikas Davis; brother, Donnie Kuder; sisters, Delores Klink, Delia Stielen, Helen Tietz, and Shirley Nelson; and daughter-in-law, Tricia Hohbach.
