Michael Herrlein

Mitchell

Michael “Mike” Herrlein, 54, of Mitchell, died Monday, July 12, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. 

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, July 15, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was held Wednesday, July 14, at Holy Family Catholic Church with a scripture service. Arrangements were by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Mike Herrlein was born to his parents, Carolyn (Smith) Reis and Donald Joseph Herrlein Sr., on Oct. 29, 1966.  Mike grew up and later worked around cattle and crops throughout the years.  

Mike attended Black Hills State University and the University of South Dakota attaining a business administration degree.

Mike married Tammie in September 2004.  He most recently worked as a crop insurance agent. 

Mike loved to have fun, camp, hunt (deer, pheasant, and waterfowl), fish and watch old western movies and Yellowstone with the boys. He was known for his quick wit and storytelling.

Mike is survived by his wife, Tammie; sons, Andrew, Jordan, and Conor; mother, Carolyn (Brad) Reis; brother, Joe Herrlein; sisters, Laura Herrlein, Koreena (Lance) Strande, Melissa (Darrin) Tillie, Holly (Jesse Turpin) Reis, and Amy (Brandan) Moe; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Kathleen Anderson, 88, of Mitchell, died Thursday, July 15, 2021, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 19, at Storla Lutheran Church in Storla. Burial was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storla. Visitation was Sunday, July 18, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a prayer service.

Anna “Kathleen” (Olsen) Anderson was born on April 1, 1933. Kathleen was born at the home farm of her grandparents in Belford Township, the oldest child of LeRoy and Elizabeth (Woods) Olsen.  She lived with her family in Palatine Township on the “Olsen homeplace” until moving with her parents to the “Wood’s homestead” in the spring of 1946.

Kathleen was baptized in the Lutheran faith by Rev. E.T. Lundy on April 30, 1933. She was a member of Victor Lutheran Congregation. On March 30, 1947, she was confirmed by Rev. Eldon Lyso. On Sept. 7, 1947, she became a member, by transfer, of Storla Lutheran Congregation. She was an active member of the congregation as a Sunday School and VBS teacher, and through her work with the Women of the Church. She served as secretary of Storla Lutheran Church and was honored for over 30 years of service. 

Her grade school education was received at Hopper Consolidated, Peterson School, and she graduated from Elm Grove School, Aurora County, as an eighth grader. Kathleen attended Plankinton High School, graduating with the class of 1951.

On Sept. 9, 1951, she was united in marriage to Archie Lauvern Anderson at Storla Lutheran by Rev. O.M. Knudson. They purchased a farm four miles north of Storla in the spring of 1951 and worked side by side for 53 years, until Archie’s death in 2005. She also taught numerous neighborhood children how to play the piano.

On Nov. 18, 2005, Kathleen moved to Mitchell and lived there until her death.

She is survived by her four children, Loretta (LuRay) Asbenson of Prescott, Ariz., Rosalyn (Roger) Beck of Central City, Neb., Lynn (Jolene) Anderson of rural Letcher, and Jewel (Matt) Owens of Surprise, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clyde (Donna) Olsen; one sister, Phyllis Niles; three sisters-in-law, Thelma Tastad, Corrine Larson, and Eldeen Stekl; and many nieces and nephews.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, five brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.

Shirley Hammrich

Mitchell

Shirley Hammrich, 90, of Mitchell, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were held Monday, July 12, at Downtown First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial was at American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was on Sunday, July 11, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Funeral arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Shirley Mae Hammrich was born May 25, 1931, to Floyd and Hattie (Severson) Brookbank in Mitchell. Shirley attended Woonsocket Elementary and Mitchell High School. On Nov. 6, 1948, Shirley married Donald Allen, and later married Leonard Hammrich on Nov. 18, 1967.

In Shirley’s early years, she worked at Mitchell Hatchery candling eggs, J. C. Penney’s, Grigg’s and Pretty Things Plus. She later became the owner of Tobin’s Transfer and Storage, owner of the Depot building, and manager of the American Legion.

Shirley was a member of the Downtown First United Methodist Church, Exchange Club, and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a Boy Scout Leader and Girl Scout Brownie Leader.

Shirley enjoyed cooking, decorating the windows at Tobin’s Transfer, vegetable canning and taking care of her yard and flower gardens. Shirley was chosen for the 2006 Mitchell Garden Club’s Yard of the Month. 

She is survived by her children, Pat (Gil) Brown of Northlake, Texas, Ron (Lori) Allen of Sanger, Texas, Sandy (Mark) McKillop of Gillette, Wyo., and Mitzie (Brian) Johnson, Dan (Lori) Allen, Dave (Julie) Allen, Tim (Cindy) Allen, Becky (Kevin) Riggs, and Cindy (Gary) Bussmus, all of Mitchell; 28 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Barton of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Sue Allen of Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Hammrich; son, Ken Allen; and her parents.
