Golda Tebay

Huron

Golda M. Tebay, 99, of Huron, formerly of Alpena, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

A private family service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery in Alpena. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. with the family present from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service starting at 6 p.m. Thursday evening. Please follow the CDC guidelines and masks are recommended.

Golda M. Tebay was born on March 8, 1921, to Jens and Anna (Bergeleen) Peterson on the family farm in rural Alpena. She was baptized in the Earlville Lutheran Church northwest of Alpena and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Woonsocket. She attended school and graduated from Alpena High School in 1939. 

On Feb. 15, 1940, Golda married Paul Tebay of Alpena. They were married for 65 years. Golda was a homemaker, and after her children were in school, she started working in the family business and continued this for 12 years.  Golda was also a bookkeeper for four years.

Golda transferred her membership to the United Parish of Alpena in 1935 and was an active member joining the WSCS later named the UMW. Golda enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading, music, and attending her grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s many activities.

Grateful for having shared in Golda’s life are her six children, Darrell (Linda) of Wessington Springs, Delayne (WyAnn) of Huron, Doreen (Darwin) Ochsner, Diana (Lynn) Presuhn and Dallas “Butch” (Susan), all of Alpena, and Debra (Scott) Manning of Miller; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Golda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; an infant son, Duane; a daughter, Donna; a great-granddaughter, Haley Tebay; sister, Doris Huether; four brothers: Kenny, Merrill, Julian, and Chet Peterson; two brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.

Ray Scherschligt

Mitchell

Ray Scherschligt, 94, of Mitchell and formerly of Alpena, died on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. 

His Mass of Christian Burial was on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Huron. Visitation was on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at St. Wilfrid Church with a prayer service.

Ray Scherschligt was born on Dec. 21, 1925, in Utica, to John and Otillia (Hladky) Scherschligt.  He attended various country schools and graduated from Lesterville High School in 1943. 

Ray served in the 25th Division of the U.S. Army from April 1945 until December 1946 and was stationed in Occupied Japan. He attended the University of South Dakota and in 1948 was signed to play professional baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers Farm System in Ponca City, Okla. He returned to Lesterville to manage and play on the Broncs amateur baseball team that went on to win the State Championship in 1950. 

Ray moved to Alpena in the spring of 1951 and married Mary Jane Pekas on June 7, 1951, in Lesterville. He was employed at the Alpena Co-op Creamery until 1958 and then managed the Alpena Co-op Oil Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1989.  Ray was a member of the Alpena Volunteer Fire Department and served 13 years on the school board, six years on the Board of the SD Petroleum Marketers, and 32 years on the Sanborn Telephone Cooperative Board. Ray was a member of the Owen Kunze American Legion Post 116 for over 66 years, holding the offices of Commander, Finance Officer, and Adjutant.  

He was also a member of the VFW Post 5548 in Wessington Springs.  Ray played amateur baseball for 40 years and was lucky enough to play his last year with his son, Mark.  Ray was voted into the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 and was elected District 3 Baseball Commissioner in 1991. He was named South Dakota Amateur Baseball Man of the Year in 1998. In addition to baseball, Ray was an avid golfer and bowler and was inducted into the Huron Lifetime Member of Bowling Hall of Fame in 1999. He was a member of St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket, serving as lector and Eucharistic Minister until he moved to Mitchell in August of 2017, after the death of his wife. In 2019, Ray was inducted into the SD Cooperative Hall of Fame.  Ray and Mary Jane were married for 66 years.  They were faith-filled people who loved to dance, play cards, and enjoy life.

Grateful for sharing his life are his son, Mark (Karen) Scherschligt of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughter, Karen (Tim) Harrington, of Mitchell; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Art (Erla) Scherschligt; sister-in-law, Viola Scherschligt; and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane in 2017; sister, Helen; brothers, John, Fred, and Lester; and nephews, Danny Zitka, Jeff Scherschligt, and Warren Scherschligt.

Dean Lee

Mitchell

Dean Lee, 86, of Mitchell and formerly of Forestburg, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dean Emmett Lee was born Nov. 18, 1933, in Mitchell at St. Joseph Hospital to Ralph and Clara (Fairfield) Lee. Dean attended the South Dakota School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls for 12 years, graduating in 1952.

After high school graduation, Dean worked as a farm laborer for several years. He was in a farm partnership with his brother, Tom, raising cattle and putting up hay. After he retired, Dean continued to help various neighbors with farm work.

Dean was involved in providing habitat for pheasants and was an avid deer hunter. He enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and watching baseball, basketball and football on TV and taking in many Dakota Wesleyan and Sanborn Central games.

In 1998, Dean started the “Dean Lee” scholarship fund to the South Dakota School for the Deaf. He also gave a monetary gift to the Artesian, Letcher and Forestburg Schools in 2003 to help towards the purchase of land to build a new school in Forestburg.

Dean had a speaking and hearing handicap but would communicate by pulling out a notebook and pen from his pocket to share a story or catch up on “local news.”

Dean is survived by his cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, James; and his brother, Richard “Tom.”

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sanborn Central Scholarship Foundation. Dean’s love for hunting would make it appropriate to wear hunting attire to his services.
