Obituaries

Raymond Knutson, 67, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, at the Prairie View Healthcare Center at Woonsocket.

His funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Immanuel Baptist Church, Wessington Springs. Burial followed in the Earlville Cemetery, Wessington Springs. His funeral service was live streamed through the Kuhler Funeral Home website.

Raymond Dean Knutson was born Feb. 12, 1955, to Herman J. and Jennie (VonEye) Knutson, at Wessington Springs. He grew up on a farm northwest of Wessington Springs, where he farmed alongside his father and his sister, Chris. He attended eight years at the Hill Top Grade School. He then attended Wessington Springs High School, graduating in 1973. He stayed and worked on the farm with his dad for several years after that. In 1991, Ray moved to Huron. Due to poor health, he recently moved to the Prairie View Healthcare Center at Woonsocket.

Ray enjoyed farming. To Ray, art was anything with a motor in it, whether it being a car or motorcycle, he enjoyed driving them and tinkering on them.   

Ray married Kim Ransom; they later divorced but remained friends.

Raymond was survived by one son, Nicholas Knutson of Huron; two granddaughters; his special friend, Kim Knutson; seven stepchildren, Mariah (Wynn) Dorris, Leslie Walton, Tammy (Shane) Hammer, Kevin (Julie) Walton, Garry (Mandy) Hale, Amber (Dan) Goetz and Shannon (Todd) Beekman; 16 step-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce (Dan) Piehl of Mitchell and Christine Schleining of Livington, Mont.; along with his nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mona Schultz

Brookings

Mona Rae Schultz, 85, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at United Living Community in Brookings. 

Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at Tulare United Church in Tulare, with Reverend Hazel Behrens officiating. The service will be live streamed to the funeral home’s website. Arrangements are by Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield (www.hykefuneralhome.com). She will have a private burial at St. John’s Cemetery at rural Tulare. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Tulare United Church Parking Lot Project, PO Box 109, Tulare, SD 57476.

Mona was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Hitchcock to Harold and Beryl (Shaw) Haag. She graduated from Tulare High School and attended Aberdeen School of Commerce. On Aug. 28, 1955, she married Carroll Schultz at St. John’s Church in rural Tulare.

Mona worked for Standard Oil Company in Huron. She and Carroll farmed and ranched until 1982. During that time, she cooked at the school in Tulare. After moving to Rapid City, Mona worked at Meadowbrook Manor. When they moved to Huron, she enjoyed working for Home Instead Senior Care.

Mona was an excellent seamstress and cook. She enjoyed camping, gardening, and crafting.

Mona was a member of the Tulare United Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

Mona is survived by her husband, Carroll, of Brookings; children, Daniel (Diane) Schultz of DeSmet, Gayla (Jack) Wells of Brookings, and Dawna (Mark) VanOverschelde of Letcher; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren (soon to be 16); and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Douglas; her sister, Lona; and her brothers, Gordy and Lynn.

Timothy Schmit

Mitchell

Timothy Schmit, 55, of Mitchell, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, at his home under hospice care in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 18, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation was Friday, Feb. 18, at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Timothy Ray Schmit was born on July 26, 1966, in Mitchell to Francis and Eileen (Spahn) Schmit. Tim’s early years were spent at the family farm near Artesian. In 1973, he moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, where he attended the River Valley School, formerly known as Hope Haven, until 1982. He participated in Special Education classes there. On Feb. 4, 1982, Tim moved to Mitchell and began receiving services from MAATC, now LifeQuest.

Tim worked at various times at the vocational program provided by LifeQuest. Tim found meaning in his day by participating in activities that he enjoyed, both at home and in the Life Enrichment Program. He had a love of all animals, especially horses and dogs. A trip to Reclamation Ranch to ride on a horse was a special memory.

Timothy is survived by his brothers, Allen (Lynette) of Kingwood, Texas, Kevin (Rebecca) of Sheridan, Wyo., Craig of Sheridan, Wyo., Terry (Chris) of Gillette, Wyo., and Robert (Brenda) of Artesian; many nieces and nephews; and the amazing staff and residents of LifeQuest.    

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, David; sister, Mary Ann; and his grandparents.
