Both Sanborn Central and Woonsocket Schools had a door decorating contest this year. Sanborn Central had people who attended their Christmas concert vote for their favorite door, and this year’s winner was the third-grade classroom door belonging to Mrs. Ashly Uecker and her students. Uecker and her class will receive donuts from the Sanborn Central High School Student Council.

The door decorating contest in Woonsocket was a little more cutthroat as it was a contest orchestrated by the administration as a competition between teachers for prizes going to the top three in the junior high/high school end of the school and the top three in the elementary end of the school. Winners were announced at an assembly on Monday, Dec. 19. In the elementary area, first place went to Mrs. Jackson; second place went to Mrs. Potrament and third place was a tie between Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Deinert/Mrs. Bruce, who teamed up to decorate because their doors are next to each other.

In the junior high/high school part of the school, first place went to Mrs. King and Mr. Olsen who worked together because their doors are connected; second place went to Mrs. Kohlmeyer and Mrs. Henriksen, who also worked together because they have connecting doorways; and third place went to Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez who also have doors next to each other. It was a great way to promote teamwork and fun for the holiday season.

Miley Adams, left, and Hudson Fouberg, right, both eighth graders at Sanborn Central, are pictured with their science fair board and information that helped them to earn second place in the middle school division of the science fair held in their gym last week.

Brooklyn Johnson, a senior at Sanborn Central, said that she decided to put together a science fair for her senior project because, “I wanted the kids to do something to have fun, and it gets everyone involved and can bring the community into it, too.” So, with help and guidance from her project mentor, Mrs. Kayla VanWinkle, she organized a science fair for all science students in grades six through 11.

She stated that the students could work in groups of two to four, or they could do a project on their own. They got to pick their groups if that’s the route they took. The science teachers, Mrs. VanWinkle, Mrs. Leah Olson and Mr. Bryce Peterson were in charge of setting the requirements for the students’ projects.

When asked what the biggest obstacle was they found while planning and preparing the science fair, they both stated that making sure the students were getting their stuff done on time according to the timeline setup for them was probably the biggest struggle they had with putting everything together.

The SCW Blackhawks basketball season started with a doubleheader against Sunshine Bible Academy (SBA) on Saturday, Dec. 10 in Woonsocket. The winning streak started with the junior varsity girls claiming victory with a final score of 48-9.

The boys’ junior varsity game was up next, and the younger Blackhawks had no trouble earning the second win of the day with a final score of 66-10.

Following was the varsity girls’ game with the Lady Blackhawks handing the SBA Crusaders a 57-7 defeat.

The final game of the night was the boys’ varsity, and it was the toughest battle and a good game to watch. The Blackhawks worked hard and pulled out the win with a 45-33 final score.

The Blackhawks have their next game in Corsica to take on the Corsica-Stickney Jaguars tonight (Thursday). Their final games before the break for the Christmas holiday are on Tuesday, Dec. 20 in Plankinton against the MVP Titans.
